Denbigh High School’s Design and Technology department is at the forefront of the delivery of D&T. It prides itself on working with learners to meet their goals and develop a wide range of skills and interests whilst progressing towards the achievement of qualifications.
In the Denbigh community. the Design and Technology department in Denbigh High School is a forward-thinking, supportive and exciting area of teaching and learning. It has won many awards for its achievement at regional, national and international level.
Year 7, 8 & 9:
Pupils study in a range of material areas. The delivery of the national curriculum takes place through several design and make projects. During the school year pupils will progress through 3 or 4 design projects.
After completing Year 9 pupils will have the opportunity to opt for GCSE courses in Design and Technology. The courses followed in Years 10 and 11 are challenging and the staff are always pleased to receive the regular positive feedback from pupils following course within the D&T department.
Currently Product Design is offered as a course in the sixth form. Typically, students will study Advanced Subsidiary level in Year 12 and complete a full A-Level in Year 13.
Year 10 & 11:
Think about the objects that you love. Your mobile phone with its delicious curves was designed on a computer screen. The car you yearn for started life as a reduced size clay model. As a 3D designer you are at the crossroads of a number of skills.
You’ll look at materials, production processes and the impact of cost and design with a range of materials and media.

This exciting course focuses on the production of products manufactured from resistant materials (manufactured board, wood, metal, plastic and card). It focuses on the application of materials, design history, and Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAD/CAM). The course enables students to study a wide range of topic areas through a combination of teacher-led and practical based assignments.

Take part in extra curricular activities as part of Wales’ most successful extra curricular department, the possibilities are endless. Could you compete in Design and Engineering completions against the best in the World?
Each learner will therefore study four areas of content:
- Core knowledge and understanding.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of product design.
- Core skills.
- In-depth skills for one of product design.
Typical projects include a practical outcome, which combine traditional manufacturing methods and new technologies such as CAD/CAM. Product Design projects will focus upon design tasks such as radios, clocks, trophies, jewellery, children’s toys, storage and furniture. If you enjoyed the practical projects taught by Mr G.W. Jones, Mrs T Owen and Mr T Turner in years 7, 8 and 9 then you will find this course challenging and rewarding. It will develop your skills in design, making, innovation, and information technology. It is the ideal preparation for our successful AS and A level course in years 12 and 13.
Assessment
The course has the same scheme of assessment, consisting of two components:
A single written paper of 2 hours, accounting for 50% of the final mark.
Coursework, occupying 35 hours of supervised time, accounting for 50% of the final mark.
The design folder of approximately 15 A3 sheets and the products you will make will constitute this coursework. Your Design Sketchbook will also be externally moderated.
Equipment required:
Revision guide (available from school for £4.00)
A3 Folder (available from school for £4.00)
A4 Ring binder
materials for making your final design (different upon your own design ideas)
Year 12 & 13:
You’ll look at materials, production processes and the impact of cost and design. You’ll produce some coursework using your own design with a range of materials and media.
You will learn how to assemble data and assess it, how to investigate facts and use deduction, how to put over your point of view, how to work as a team, and how to take responsibility for your own learning.
Experience training on the latest manufacturing equipment. You will use state of the art CNC equipment, including laser cutters, CNC milling/routing and 3D printing.
